peek-a-boo billy

here's a fresh take on the ubiquitous billy bookcase. vincent had a white billy bookcase that he refused to dump or sell when he moved to a smaller apartment. so what's left to do but hack it?

"the hack includes a white billy bookshelf, a small pint of acrylic green paint and two vattern doors. there are two reasons why i used shorter vattern doors. the first is to create a contemporary and unique look. the doors are intended NOT to cover all of the contents of the billy. the overall effect is to give a glimpse or tease of the interesting books i have. the second reason is to avoid installing puller handles to open the doors. by leaving a gap, i can easily open the open doors by pulling on the side.

the center portion of the billy displays dessert plates and hopefully a set of interesting tea pot and accessories, if we eventually find ones we like."

  2. And you post a rather non-constructive criticism as an anonymous.

I would love to see one of your hack one of these days.

  4. i think it'd be great with doors that fully cover the width of the shelves.

  5. What hinges do you use to have the door fold down? I need to build a similar door for a long low shelf, but I want it to fold down and release when you push the top - so no handle.

Did you get them at Ikea?

  6. Back in my Art/Design School days, we were "instructed" in how-to-do-a-"Crit" (Critique)- and that bit of advice has stayed w/ me all these years. First, start out w/ a positive remark/comment (to get the listeners attention/ear)...then, "blast away"- you stand a much better chance of the Crit-ee, "getting" it, if you start out that a way.
For Hinges-check out http://www.rockler.com-they're the best for "projects". Any hing will work in a Vertical/horizontal fashion...just for a horizontal door, a chain, or other restraint, can prevent the door from "overextending"

  7. Morgan: The hinges I used are ANORDNA, 400.508.18. Yes everything is from IKEA (those are OREN doors) except...

    1. The magnetic latches that hold the doors up.

    2. Two small L-brackets to hold the top shelf, so that when you open the door, the shelf will stay put.

Both items can be found in most hardware stores.

Randall: Thanks for the comments. I am all ears to constructive criticism.

I did think about covering the entire width of the shelves. OREN has a longer piece, which I have to saw. With that I will have to mount handles or use one of those push-to-open magnetic latch.

  8. What paint (brand/type) did you use, and did you use a primer? I am looking to hack my own Billy bookcase but didn't think I'd be able to paint it. You're giving me new hope!
