anyways, back to business. kalle tipped me on this clever hack that lets you hide your hi-fi subwoofer in an ikea hol storage cube. alas, the site is in french.

this is karma coming back at me for not paying attention in french class. so, monsieur christian if you're out there reading this, je suis désolé. and please translate the page for me. i remain votre petit étudiant, jules. link.

hey jules, I had actually thought of using the bigger hol for hiding CPU and other computer peripherals and I may still do that (I'm using a sideboard I already had for the time being). or I may do what this guy did and get the smaller hol to hide the computer subwoof and stuff on top of the sideboard... see http://flickr.com/photos/cocoabliss/215006213/.
ReplyDeleteanyhoo, christian is saying that his lady wasn't crazy about electronic stuff lying around and good thing for ikea because it offered affordable functional furniture that was also pretty, but it took some convincing because the lady thought it looked too much like a clothes hamper at first... then he waxes poetic about the speakers, says that the hol is easy to put together without glue and that it's a pain to stain and varnish without a spray gun, and then some more geeky stuff about the performance of the speakers. guys.

My subwoofer is hidden under a Lack side table behind the couch with my printer sitting on it. Definitly not as cool as the Hol though but it's space efficient for sure.
ReplyDeleteme love canadians! :) and i do like your suggestion of using the bigger hol.
ReplyDeletethat doesn't hide it as well, daedal, but i guess it works too.
Definitivement pas. C'est loin de ton invention, Jules. C'est tres ingenieux.

A german DIY-speaker-magazine ("Klang + Ton") also used the HOL as a hiding place for a subwoofer.
ReplyDeleteSee for example here:

I wanted to use this unit, but my sub is too darn tall. Everything I tried was too short or lacked depth to hide my Sub. No, it's not some humungous sub, just an odd-shaped one.
ReplyDeleteMy solution was to hack two Lack end tables so that they were basically sharing the same legs. I'll share pix soon.
I should use 2 of these as end tables instead of the Lack ones - then I could hide all the jumbly wires, electrical bars, assorted little black boxes with antenna on and thingies with flashing lights I apparently have to have to make the TV,VCR,DVD, Computer, and Ikea standard lamp that I can't remember the name of, etc work
