eric recently purchased the lack coffee and side tables from ikea and has a question: "as you might already know, they are composed of a thin fiberboard finish and i was wondering if there was some sort of polish or any other product i could apply to it to prevent those dang surface scratches. it's been less then a week and is already showing signs of wear. any thoughts?"personally, i've never polished my coffee tables (aiks!) so i'm not sure what is available. anyhoo, any martha-esque person out there who can offer eric a clue?

We had an entire suite of Lack tables purchased for a rental apartment. Prior to using them, we coated the tops (of the end tables and console table) as well as the legs of the coffee table with a high density polyurethane. When the inevitable wear marks occurred, they mostly marred only the poly - which could be sanded do out and re-poly-ed whenever we had the time and inclination. This may be more maintenance than your question asked for, but I can attest that it does work.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your tip! Would I need to sand off the current finish before applying the Poly or can I just grab a brush and get to work?
ReplyDeleteAre they all colored or could I find a transparent one just to protect the surface?

I know for sure we didn't really prep them in any way, other than to just dust them off. And the poly must have been clear, because we were trying to preserve the Ikea birch "look". I'm sorry I don't know more about it, we just went on down to Home Depot and picked up a quart of whatever they had in stock. I do recall that there were choices regarding the durability of the finish and we chose the one that, from the can's description, appeared to be the toughest.
ReplyDeleteFWIW, The "damage" that we ended up repairing was cold-drink-ring-related and a light sanding was enough to even it out. A really light coat of the poly made it good as new.
