no pooper cat litter

well, i've never had a cat, being a dog person and all. but after viewing these great ideas from apartment therapy's pet decor contest, kitties are purring closer to heart. here's another entry that uses ikea furniture to cleverly hide the catbox.

dana's entry says: "since the bathroom is so tiny, the only place for the catbox was the kitchen - ugh. my solution is to be hyper-vigilant about changing it, and keeping it hidden with a fancy non-catbox-cover cover. the table is a little kids' play table from ikea (the gulliver); it fits the dimensions of the enclosed catbox perfectly. i topped it off with a window shade from cost plus, a plant, some candles, and of course, some cat-related art. the candles do double duty to make the place oh-so-romantic and enchanting and to hide any residual cat odors left over from my previously mentioned hyper-vigilant cleaning. i've had people over for dinner who didn't notice it until it was pointed out. the perfect crime!" we agree, dana.

  1. I have a friend with a very small apartment and who just took in a cat in desperate need of a home. The only reasonable place for a litter box is her kitchen. (I know--but trust me on this one!). Only problem is that she has it just out in the open! My cat's box is also open but they have privacy & room to turn around (I've found that the odor was concentrated much more in the covered or domed boxes). I think I'll construct something similar for her but put the box on a sturdy mat or carpet remnant such that it's inside the sides of the box. This way she can just slide out box & mat together to clean it and just shake the mat off & slide it all back in. I might even try a sturdy cardboard but decorate it with contact paper. This way, it can be responsibly disposed of if it gets too badly stained.

A catnip scratch pad or cat grass plant on the top would make a nice attraction and nice perch if placed next to a window. Thanks for the idea!

  2. I love this!!!!!! We need to move our cat box from the laundry area (it's too noisy for the kitteh) and with this idea, I can put it in the basement bathroom without it being super obvious.

    Thanks for the idea!
