more pet decor. seems like ikea should create a new furnishing category for our animal friends. julie tipped me (thanks julie!) on this cat gym put together from parts of the ikea stolmen storage system.
i like the way it blends into the living room and gives the cats a seat in family get-togethers. the instructions are not in english (danish? finnish?) but the pictures are pretty self-explanatory. link.

WOW! I have been trying to think of a way to make something almost exactly like this for my very acrobatic kitten!!
ReplyDeleteyes, erica, this is awesome isn't it?
ReplyDeleteYep! The instructions are in finnish. - jaana
ReplyDeletethanks jaana.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really great idea! Wow - I know our kitten would love this, and maybe our older (and lazier)cat will join in too!
ReplyDeleteWould of been nice to have a list of component names like the page that is not in English.
ReplyDeletethe components seem to be super expensive if you check for "stolmen" parts on ikea's website... :( so it doesn't quite work unless you're OK with spending a good amount of cash.
ReplyDeletePosts are listed as $30 a piece, shelves $20 each, and fittings $2.50 to $5.00. So the set up in the pic would cost $200+!
I'm wondering if there's a way to do this for a fraction of the price by doing it in PVC piping.
Yes, it is Finnish, here is a translations site. http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=fi&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.niksa.net%2Fkiipeilypuu.html
ReplyDeleteRemember those prices are most likely not dollars. PVC would probably be cheaper, but you'd need to put in more work for the aesthetics. If it were me, I'd probably rope all the poles and carpet the shelves.
BTW, Very nice cat furniture ideas site. :)
A really inspirational hack, I will probably make a smaller version of it.
ReplyDeleteHere is a link to a googletranlsation finnish to english: link
FY Collective I, I just made a floor to ceiling stolman post (around 2.7m) and 40 meters of 6mm rope only made it 2/3s the way up! It takes a lot of rope and time and sweat.
ReplyDeleteLooks sweet though :-)
length rope = (3,1415 * pole diameter * pole length) / rope diameter
ReplyDeletemaybe add an extra 20% to the length and use a hammer to get the sisal tight
