okay, this isn't exactly a hack, it's a business. still, i love the idea of providing ikea customers with options. bemz does beautiful slipcovers made to ikea armchairs, sofas and cushion specifications. the site is a virtual changing room for sexy sofas. click on the swatches and before you can say "klippan!" your ikea sofa gets dressed in different hues and patterns.
hmm ... i hope they soon do quilt covers, bed trims and the like as well.

ReplyDeleteoh, my god. thank you for posting this. i've been trying to find a slip cover for an old ikea karlanda that i picked up off of craigslist and have been dissatisfied with the few slipcover colors i've seen on ebay. plus, it's so awesome that they send you swatches so you can test the exact color in the living room before you commit!

I've done the Bemz thing, should look again but the last time I saw options, none were worth over and above what Ikea has. THE ULTIMATE would be for some clever Ikea hack person to formulate and publish PATTERNS for us industrious home seamstresses to make our own out of whatever fabric we choose. I may resort to a seam ripper and use my current cover as a template, thinkabbaoudit cha-ching!

ReplyDeleteJust translated the savemysofa prices into US dollars, after shipping, you can get a new sofa for less at IKEA. Interesting that this site and BEMZ are foreign-based. You'd think an American would have caught on my now. Still toying with making my own...would love to hear from someone who has done it.

Then I bought the black one, put in my old klippan and tried with my nice bed cover that I have from Thailand, my hometown
It look so nice , my husband like it so much.

ReplyDeleteI genuinely don't understand why anyone in a city with access to decorator clearance fabric (often found here in LA for $5ish a yard) and upholsterers doesn't realize they'll build slipcovers for whatever you bring in the door. You don't have to find someone who makes covers for YOUR sofa, you need to find someone who makes slipcovers PERIOD, discounted fabric plus labor only WILL be much cheaper than a new sofa Cathy.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you. Things is, though, the ikea stuff is so modular/simply shaped, I don't know why more people don't just go for it and make one. It will take about 6 hours for the whole project, but with an old bed sheet or muslin, and you can make your own pattern, and keep making new slipcovers.
